I imagine that the hardest part tomorrow will be getting to the finish line, knowing that he is not waiting for me this time. However, there is an aspect to this race that will make it very special. The Regional Support Command - Capital, 19th Sustainment Brigade Soldiers stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan will be participating in a shadow run of the race. According to this article, there will be a booth at the race for people to send thanks and greetings to the soldiers. The soldiers will also get race t-shirts, bibs and goodie bags just like we did.
According to Major Eric Peterson, "Soldiers, sailors, Marines and Airmen enjoy the shadow runs because they are great for morale, and they allow for us to be normal and not have to wear a service issued PT uniform for the run."
And so, we are apart, far apart, but united in a way by these soldiers and our common love of running.
